Short answer: heels dance is a style of choreography performed in high heels. It blends jazz, hip-hop, commercial and Latin movement with walks, turns, floorwork and strong, confident styling. A heels dance class teaches you how to balance, walk and move in heels, then puts it together in a short routine.

This guide explains where heels dance comes from, the main styles, what happens in a beginner class, whether it is hard, and which shoes to wear.

What is heels dance?

Heels dance, also called heels choreography or stiletto dance, grew out of jazz, commercial dance and music-video choreography. It is not one fixed set of steps. It is a way of dancing that uses the heel as part of the movement: long leg lines, hip action, sharp poses, hair and arm styling, and floorwork.

People take heels classes to build confidence, improve posture and balance, get a workout, and learn to perform. You do not need dance experience to start.

Styles of heels dance

  • Commercial heels: the style seen in music videos and on stage. Sharp, hip-hop and jazz influenced.
  • Jazz and jazz-funk heels: kicks, turns and technical lines.
  • Sensual and floorwork heels: slower, fluid movement with a lot of work on the floor.
  • Latin heels: salsa and bachata ladies' styling, with footwork and hip movement to Latin music.
  • Burlesque-inspired heels: theatrical, playful performance. See what is burlesque dance.

Is heels dance hard for beginners?

The first few classes are challenging mainly because of balance, not the steps. Your ankles, calves and core need time to get used to working in heels. Most beginners feel noticeably steadier after three or four classes.

To make it easier:

  • Start in a lower, stable heel, around 2" to 2.5", before moving up.
  • Warm up your ankles and calves before you put heels on.
  • Keep your weight over the balls of your feet with a strong core.
  • Roll through the foot when you walk rather than stamping.
  • Practise walks and weight changes at home for a few minutes a day.

What shoes do you need for heels dance?

Use real dance heels, not fashion heels. Dance heels have a suede sole for controlled turns, a balanced heel, cushioning under the ball of the foot, and a strap or boot shaft that holds your ankle.

  • Dance boots: the most popular choice for heels class. The shaft supports the ankle during floorwork and drops. Browse dance boots or read how to choose dance boots.
  • Dance heels and booties: open-toe dance booties and strappy heels for a lighter feel. Browse dance heels.
  • Heel height: beginners do best at 2.5" to 3" with a flared heel. Stilettos at 3.5" to 4" are for confident dancers.
