How Made-to-Measure Dance Dresses Work
Every dress on this page can be made to your own measurements. Standard sizes are cut for an average figure, but dancers rarely are: a long torso, a small waist with fuller hips, or broad swimmer's shoulders can all leave a standard dress loose in one place and tight in another. On a practice floor that is a small annoyance; on a competition floor it shows in every turn and every line. A custom made dance dress removes the guesswork.
- Pick your dress and choose your color.
- Select Customized in the size menu. Boxes for your measurements appear right on the product page.
- Enter your bust, waist, hip and height, in inches or centimeters. For a long ballroom gown, add your hollow-to-floor length too.
- Check out as usual. Your measurements travel with your order, and the dress is cut and sewn to them.
A Customized size costs the same as a standard size. You pay the listed price, with no extra charge for making it to measure.
How to Measure for a Custom Dance Dress
Measure over thin underwear or a leotard, not over clothes, and keep the tape level and snug without pulling it tight. Having a friend take the measurements gives the most accurate result.
- Bust: around the fullest part of the chest, with the tape straight across the back.
- Waist: around the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the belly button.
- Hip: around the fullest part of the hips and seat, with your feet together.
- Height: standing straight against a wall, barefoot.
- Hollow to floor (long dresses): from the dip at the base of your neck straight down to the floor, barefoot. We allow for heels when we cut the hem.
Custom Ballroom Gowns and Custom Latin Dresses
Fit matters in different places for the two styles. Ballroom gowns depend on a close bodice and an accurate length: the skirt should brush the top of your shoe so it flows in waltz and foxtrot without catching under the heel. That is why the hollow-to-floor measurement matters for a custom ballroom gown.
Latin and salsa dance dresses depend on the torso and hips. The dress has to stay put through hip action, spins and lifts, and fringe or flounce hems only hang evenly when the waist sits in the right place. A made-to-measure Latin dress keeps straps, cut-outs and the waistline exactly where the design intends.
