How to Choose Swing Dance Shoes

Sole: suede vs. street

A suede sole is the standard for studio and social floors. It grips just enough to stop your knee twisting, then releases on a pivot. Use it indoors only — suede shreds on concrete and soaks up rain. A street sole (leather or rubber) is what you want for outdoor socials, church halls, and bar floors, and it's the practical choice if you only own one pair.

Heel height: lower than you think

Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, and Charleston are bouncy, weight-forward dances. Most dancers land on a 1" to 1.5" Cuban or block heel — high enough to shift your weight over the ball of the foot, low enough to survive three hours of triple-steps. West Coast Swing is smoother and more grounded, so a 2" to 2.5" heel works if you're used to it. Flats and low-heeled dance sneakers are the safest first pair.

Fit and straps

Swing pulls your foot in directions ballroom doesn't. An unsecured pump will come off. Look for a T-strap, ankle strap, or lace-up. Size dance shoes snugly — your toes should reach the end without curling. Our shoes run true to US sizing; check the Size & Heel Guide before ordering.

Swing Dance Shoes: FAQ

What shoes should I wear for swing dancing?

A low-heeled shoe (1"–1.5") with a suede sole and a strap that secures the foot. Suede lets you pivot without your shoe catching on the floor; the strap keeps it on through swingouts and aerials.

Are Keds good for swing dancing?

Keds and similar canvas sneakers are a common first shoe because they're cheap and flexible, but the rubber sole grips hard on a wood floor. That grip is what puts torque through your knee on a pivot. They're fine for a first class; if you're dancing weekly, move to a suede-soled dance shoe.

Can I wear heels to swing dance?

Yes, up to about 2.5". Anything higher pushes your weight forward and makes the bounce and triple-steps hard to control. Cuban and block heels are far more stable than stilettos for swing.

Do I need suede soles?

Only if you dance indoors on wood. For outdoor socials or mixed floors, a street sole is more practical and lasts longer.

What heel height is best for Lindy Hop?

1" to 1.5". Lindy is weight-forward and high-energy — a low Cuban or block heel keeps you balanced over the ball of your foot for a full night of dancing.
